January 9th 2013-- For the first time ever Augusta's GAIS Eagles are the #1 ranked HomeSchool Basketball Team in the Southeast! It's been a long time coming for this senior laden group, lets take a quick look at their journey to #1 as it has been well documented by HSLive365...

In 2010-11 GAIS shocked the nation with a 2nd semester win over the top ranked North Atlanta Flight, a few weeks later Augusta was unable to make the Final 4 of the NCHBC Southeast Championships in Atlanta, a tournament that North Atlanta won.Last season Augusta not only made the Southeast Final Four they made it to the NCHBC Southeast Championship game, GAIS played their hearts out and with just a few seconds left Augusta had a 2 point, poised to become HomeSchool Basketball's Southeast Champions, what happened next was something no one at that gym will ever forget. The Nashville (NCC) Warriors hit a game winning, buzzer beating, 3 point shot. It was a stunning way to end a game that Augusta played well enough to win.Back to present day... While Augusta opened the season as #4 in Pre-Season Rankings, they have spent all season ranked 2nd in the Southeast, behind 2011 16U Gold Ball National Champion & 2012 National Final Four Memphis FCA. All that changed on January 6th when the GAIS Eagles soared over 1000 spots nationally in the updated (1/6) MaxPreps Rankings. GAIS soared at the right time, days before the HSLive365 Power Ranking voters began casting their votes & a week before any Coaches' Poll voters will submit their rankings. Whether or not GAIS will pass a red hot Memphis FCA Nighthawks squad in the Official Rankings is yet to be seen, regardless the 2012-13 GAIS Eagles have the perfect recipe for greatness. It has been years in the making, it has been steady growth for coaches & players alike, this GAIS squad is a special one. The Eagles are led by Head Coach Chad Cook and two returning All-American's (& Top Maravich Candidates) Austin Crown & Matt Miller. GAIS is currently HomeSchool Basketball's 9th ranked team and recently received a review by CJ Pomeroy, Click Here to view this write up. While GAIS has never before been #1 in the Southeast they did win the 2011 East Coast Championships, with sophomores leading the way. At the 2012 National Championships they became the first team ever, that has attended the East Coast Championships, to make the National Sweet 16 and finished the season as Georgia's top ranked team, another first. This season Augusta's GAIS Eagles are determined to experience many more first, GAIS is looking to win the Southeast Championships, make the National Elite 8 (Class 6A), make a trip to the National Final Four, play for a Gold Ball National Championship, win a Gold Ball National Championship, and become HomeSchool Basketball's Undisputed National Champion! It will not be easy GAIS to accomplish all of their goals, it will not be easy to stay #1 in the MaxPreps Rankings, and it will not be easy to pass Memphis FCA in the Official Rankings, but it is possible. With this group anything is possible.
